Hypnotherapy and Guided Imagery
Hypnotherapy over the years has grown and become a wonderful tool in helping people with issues in their lives. From fears to phobias - to weight loss and quitting smoking - to helping with childbirth and surgery and this list continues to grow as people are willing to use this tool in their lives. I have even seen a script for helping someone stop snoring. I see no limits in the way hypnotherapy can be used, it’s just a matter of getting the right elements in the script and presenting them to the client.
There is a lot of fear surrounding Hypnotherapy. Many have seen a stage hypnotist that has supposedly made people do things that they normally wouldn’t do, for example, clucking like a chicken. I can assure you that if you didn’t want to cluck like a chicken, you wouldn’t. Most of the people ‘chosen’ to get on stage are people that the practitioner is positive will perform as he/she wants them too. You have to want to do it before it will happen. Real hypnosis for therapeutic purposes gives subjects more control over their minds and bodies, not less. There is nothing I can put in your subconscious that you will do if you didn’t already have a desire to do it in the first place.
This means, if you don’t really want to quit smoking, all the hypnotherapy in the world is not going to stop you from lighting up. Only true desire can be met. So if you actually want to quit and are having difficulty with giving it up, a hypnotherapist can probably plant a seed that will help you to quit. But do not be deceived you are the only one doing the work, we’re just giving a suggestion that can help you in your plight.
Many people fear or believe that they can not be hypnotized. Have you ever been enthralled in a movie at the theater that caused you to jump, scream, or even cry? You were most likely in a trance-like state. Ever been so busy working on a document for the boss that all time seemed to slip away? You were possibly in a trance-like state. Ever meditated? Ever been on a long road trip and the white lines caught your attention and you suddenly shook your head to snap out of it? Most likely you were in a trance-like state. All of these things the majority of us do in our lifetimes. There are very few people that cannot be put into a trance and even fewer that can’t reach their subconscious in some form or fashion.
I have found that hypnotherapy works in many situations but there are important ingredients for it to really be successful. First, you must have a desire for the process to work. Second, you must have some belief that hypnotherapy will work. Third, you must be actively be working to correct the issue. (Smokers, trying to smoke less. Dieters, trying to diet and exercise.) Know that there is NO silver bullet and sometimes you need to come back for several sessions so they can be tweaked as things change for you. As we peel back layers of an issue we need to continually change and tweak the script you’re listening to.
